The German word Zeitgeist, meaning “the spirit of the age,” entered philosophical discourse through Hegel. He used the term to describe an invisible force permeating an era and expressing itself through its art, architecture, ideas, and everyday life. The spirit of an age cannot be chosen or rejected — it can only be discovered.
This is what Nef attempts to do.
His works emerge spontaneously. A thought appears in the mind, takes the form of an image, and refuses to let the artist go until it has been given a physical form.
At the core of his practice is the collision of opposites. Nikita brings together ideas and imagery drawn from popular culture, religion, art, music, and the past. Familiar and accessible symbols coexist with abstract and unsettling forms, creating the artist’s personal vision of the zeitgeist — a reflection of how different meanings become entangled and how they are experienced in the present moment.
The spirit of the age cannot be chosen. It simply exists — in the air, in language, in the images that surround us, in the way we look at the world and what we choose to see.
The exhibition unfolds as a chaotic space in which paintings, objects, and installations coexist and enter into dialogue with one another. Nef does not work through separation, but through the overlapping of forms and meanings. His method is to bring together things that are conventionally considered incompatible. Yet within this apparent chaos, a single thread runs through the entire exhibition.
The project invites the viewer to follow the artist’s journey — from simple images and ironic ideas toward heavier forms and more sincere statements that he seeks to share with the audience.
